Hello friends and welcome to my new site. Actually, a lot of you have probably already checked it out, it’s my first time writing here. How exciting! :-)>
I’m going to post here weekly, there’s a ton going on so hopefully I’ll have something interesting to write about.
Huge news today that I know affects all of you out there very deeply…
The Jonas Brothers have broken up.
And just when I was getting into their last record.
I’d actually really be interested in the story if they’d broken up as brothers..they hated each other SO much that they ended their familial relationship. That would be a story.
Last week I was in NYC for Eddie Trunk’s 30th anniversary in radio party. I’ve known Ed since my first interview with him in 1984 when we were promoting Fistful Of Metal. Ed has been a champion for Anthrax (and a friend) all these years and I was honored to be asked to play at his bash. On top of that, getting to play Kiss songs with Ace and Peter made it one of those Make A Wish moments. Mike Portnoy was MD’ing (music biz language for Music Director-ing) this whole thing and after a lot of back and forth with all involved (Frank Bello, Bumblefoot, Billy Sheehan, Peter and Ace) we settled on Got To Choose, Parasite, Love Her All I Can, Hooligan and Rock N Roll All Nite. I chose Got To Choose, Parasite and Love Her All I Can because they are some of my favorite Kiss songs and Kiss hasn’t played them live very often (if at all) in the last 35 years.
At soundcheck after Frankie and I played Love Her All I Can with Ace and Peter we looked at each other and Frankie said “What the Hell did we just do, can you believe this???” It was fucking nuts. To be playing songs that I grew up with, songs that have had such an influence on me, with those guys, it’s just hard to wrap my head around it. I’ve been friends with Ace and Peter for years but that doesn’t take away from the enormity of the situation. Without Kiss I’m not writing a blog for my website, well, not a music related website. I wouldn’t have started down this path without them. It really means the world to me to be a part of their world. OK, I think you get it.
PS Ace fucking ripped. He nailed every solo. His playing is so unique and aggressive. Ace Frehley lead guitar!!!
While I was in NY my wife Pearl was home dealing with plumbing Hell in our house. Long story short all the pipes coming out of our house were destroyed and completely blocked so it all backed up. It was a week of septic water, septic gas, chemical warfare to kill all the delicious septic bacteria, scouring the kitchen etc etc. We stayed at Pearl’s mom’s house until it was over. When the shit (literally) we take for granted every day goes tits up it’s always an exciting adventure into worlds I know nothing about At least it didn’t happen on Xmas.
Charlie, Frankie and I are working hard at new Anthrax. We’ve had a couple of writing sessions and things are moving along well, fast for us actually. We’ve got 7 songs arranged musically and we’re getting together again in a week and a half. The new stuff is aggressive, fast, even riff-ier than the last record and some of it is difficult to play. Nothing like writing parts that are above my ability as a guitar player! When that happens the drill sergeant in my brain yells “PRACTICE YOU LAZY FUCK!” So I do. And I nail that shit.
I’m just getting into lyrics, song titles, nothing to talk about yet.
Speaking of guitar playing above my ability…
Brendon Small is an insane guitar player. We were rehearsing for the Mr. Show Experience at Festival Supreme and just watching him fuck around is ridiculous. We went to the premier of Metalocalypse: The Doomstar Requiem and the music he wrote is incredible. Hearing it all with a huge orchestra (conducted by Bear McCreary) really loud in a theater was so awesome. The soundtrack is available as of today. Get it.
In other news…
Pearl’s record is coming along. It’s almost all tracked, just waiting on some solos to get played and then Jay Ruston is mixing. It’s a great record. Stay tuned.
The Posehn record is just getting underway. Lot’s of killer guitar players and drummers involved and the material is hilarious and crushing.
Megaforce is putting it out next year.
That’s it for now. Happy Halloween!
Talk at ya soon.
